Have you ever wondered how large building materials like plasterboard make their way into multistorey buildings? This question highlights the ingenuity and problem-solving skills of construction teams working on urban projects. We’re excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at how Paramount Commercial Interiors (PCI) tackled this challenge for our new office construction.
The Challenge: Moving Large Building Materials in Tight Spaces
Building in an urban environment presents numerous logistical challenges. One of the most significant is transporting large building materials such as plasterboard. Traditional methods, like using elevators, often fall short when it comes to handling oversized items. This is especially true for high-rise buildings, where space constraints and safety regulations limit what can be moved through internal routes.
Our Innovative Solution: Craning Through the Windows
For our new office, PCI devised a creative and effective solution: craning the plasterboard through the windows. Though not uncommon in the construction industry, this method showcases the adaptability and ingenuity required to keep a project on track.
The team did an amazing job overcoming these logistical hurdles. Their expertise and dedication ensured that construction stayed on track and that building materials were delivered safely and efficiently. This process was not without its challenges, including:
- Weather Conditions: Wind and rain can impact the safety and feasibility of craning operations.
- Coordination: Ensuring clear communication between the crane operator and the team inside the building was crucial for safety and efficiency.
- Safety Measures: Rigorous safety protocols were followed to protect both the workers and the materials.
An Unexpected Delay: The Need for a Larger Crane
Originally, the craning operation was scheduled for a week earlier. However, upon closer inspection, the crane needed to reach over the existing entry pillars of the building, requiring the use of a larger crane than initially planned. Despite this unforeseen challenge, the team quickly adapted, arranging for the larger crane and rescheduling the operation to ensure everything proceeded smoothly.
Our Curious Neighbours
The spectacle of craning plasterboard windows had our new neighbours at Nagle & Co. sending us photos from their offices. Their vantage point offered a perfect view of the crane in action, capturing the excitement and novelty of the operation. It seems we provided some unexpected entertainment as we maneuvered the materials into our future workspace.
Commencing Building Works
With the successful delivery of the plasterboard, WJM officially has commenced building works on our new office. This marked an exciting milestone in the construction process, bringing us one step closer to realising our vision for a modern, innovative workspace.
